Country covers and Kari Ann Owen’s original music are offered for the support of Wildhorse! Therapeutic Riding Program and The Claudia A. Clark Fund for Survivors of Violence.
Wildhorse! Therapeutic Riding Program was begun by Dr. Kari Ann Owen in November 2006 in the San Francisco Bay Area. Kari Ann had already received her PATH International Therapeutic Riding Instructional Certification in June 2004 and had been instructing since the Summer 0f 2001, and at Cornerstone Equestrian Center in the Napa Valley. Kari Ann had never stopped receiving instruction in her favorite riding disciplines, and wanted to found a program that would serve the disabled while incorporating her riding and artistic disciplines, particularly dance, and yoga, which had served her recovery from crippling sciatica so well.
Since its inception, Wildhorse! has taught children and adults with the widest possible range of disabilities, from anorexia and bulimia, to autism and ADHD, to Parkinson’s, and currently MS and pediatric vision impairment. In the eleven years since Wildhorse’s founding and the sixteen years since Kari Ann began her student apprenticeship teaching therapeutic riding, Wildhorse has invented many new techniques for helping this disabled, from geometry on horseback to the use of bells at varied volume for a blind student whose independent riding astonished his friends, his church and our own program.
We never turn anyone away for lack of funds, and in Montana we are very fortunate to be able to accept students with the Medicaid Home Based Community Services Waiver. Montana has opened new educational opportunities for both Kari Ann and our volunteers, and wonderful exposure to a dressage master and marvelous Western riders and horse trainers. We are extremely grateful for the kindness, friendliness and horse expertise of the Missoula, Lolo and Stevensville communities.
Wildhorse! is a sole proprietorship under the wing of Seedlings of Change, a 501C3 nonprofit which accepts donations for us and funds small requests like yearly insurance and re4certification fees. http://www.seedlingsofchange.org/current-project-2015-wildhorse-therapeutic-riding-program.html
Wildhorse! is directed by Dr. Kari Ann Owen, who is the Head Instructor and also trainer of volunteers, evaluator of students, grant researcher, publicist and financial and personnel record keeper. Her favorite activity, of course, is teaching. Her second favorite activity is taking the volunteers out for ice cream. Volunteer longevity for Wildhorse! has ranged up to four years, both in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Missoula, MT area.
The Claudia A. Clark Fund for Survivors of Violence is dedicated to two organizations helping survivors of violent crime, including rape and domestic violence.
The fund is named for Kari Ann’s beloved friend, Claudia A. Clark, who took a stand with Kari Ann against a date rapist. Kari Ann took the case through court. Since the perpetrator knew where Kari Ann and Claudia lived, Kari Ann volunteered to move out. Claudia refused, and she and Kari Ann have remained steadfast and loving friends since surviving that horror thirty four years ago.
The Claudia A. Clark Fund will channel all contributions to The Women’s Center of Cambridge and the Missoula, MT YWCA. Both centers provide a huge variety of support services to foster the safety and stability of all who contact them.
